The Surge In Recent Popularity ๐ง
In recent months, ChatGPT has seen a surge in popularity as more and more people discover its capabilities. Its versatility and ability to learn and adapt make it a valuable tool for a wide range of applications. As a result, it has gained a following among people interested in artificial intelligence and those seeking a more efficient way to complete tasks such as writing essays and generating text. As word continues to spread about ChatGPT, it's likely that its popularity will only continue to grow.
Now be aware, it isnโt some sort of magical genie that can simply do your homework for you if you just ask it, or is it? Well no, but it does come quite close.
Can ChatGPT Help With School Essays?
In order to truly figure out if ChatGPT is the right tool for, we will look into the 4 of the most commonly accepted criterion of text generation:
Idea generation
Grammar and spelling correction
Research assistance
Paraphrasing and summarization
Idea Generation ๐ก
Have you ever struggled to generate ideas for an essay while staring at a blank screen? It can be ESPECIALLY tough when you're feeling stuck or struggling to find a clear direction for your writing. That's where idea generation comes in. It's the process of coming up with new ideas and concepts for your essay, and it's an essential part of the writing process. Whether you're brainstorming ideas on your own or seeking help from others, idea generation can help you come up with fresh and relevant ideas to include in your work. And let's be real, having a strong foundation of ideas is key to writing a successful essay. It allows you to develop a clear and cohesive argument and generate supporting evidence and examples to back it up. So lets see if ChatGPT can come up with some ideas for a potential essay:
Wow. Not only did it manage to get all 20 of them, which I thought was a stretch in the first place, all of them seem like solid foundations for a good essay. They make sense, are relatable with modern times and also seem to revolve around recent events, for example number 6, genetically modified food is gaining an astounding amount of popularity recently.

However, I want to take this one step-further, lets see if ChatGPT can actually write an essay on one of these ideas. Lets chose number 7 just as an example:
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by ChatGPT's ability to write an entire essay on the topic I provided. While the level of understanding and insight displayed in the essay is impressive, it's important to keep in mind that ChatGPT is a machine and may not always produce writing that aligns with your personal perspective or style. That being said, the essay could still easily serve as a solid outline or starting point for your own writing. Even if you don't agree with everything in the essay or want to add your own personal touch, ChatGPT's analysis and structure could be a helpful reference as you work on your own essay. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide if ChatGPT's output meets your needs and expectations.
There is still one more thing i would like to test out. Can ChatGPT write an essay in a style or way that I would like it to? Could I tell it make my essay sound human, or have a special personality? I asked ChatGPT to write an essay on quantum entanglement, like a 14 year old would:
I am genuinely impressed and a bit terrified of the very real possibility that content writers will be replaced by AI very soon. ChatGPT somehow managed to make this essay sound unprofessional yet really detailed, especially from the eyes of a 14 year old. I could probably just copy and paste this into one of my school assessments and get A+, and the teacher would be none the wiser. We can see how the AI used words that would make sense to the average understanding of a 14-15 year old, this makes it an almost perfect tool to get inspiration, or even just copy and paste from for students.
Grammar and Spelling Correction ๐
One big potential benefit of using ChatGPT for school essays is its ability to correct grammar and spelling mistakes. ChatGPT has been trained on a insane 175 billion parameters which basically means that it has a really good understanding of correct grammar and spelling. This means that it may be able to catch errors that you may have missed and suggest corrections. Or at least thatโs what weโve been told. Lets test ChatGPT and see for ourselves:
Look at that screenshot! ChatGPT is like a grammar and spelling superhero. It takes a jumbled mess of a paragraph and turns it into something that's actually humanly readable. It would be easier to decipher ancient mandarain than to read the original text, but somehow, ChatGPT pulls through. I mean, I guess it helps when you've got a language model trained on like 200 billion parameters (175B to be exact), but still, it's pretty impressive. I feel like I could turn in this paragraph to my high school English teacher would not be able to differentiate it from any other. ChatGPT, you've got my vote. Now if only you could do something about my terrible handwriting...๐ฌ
Research Assistance ๐
ChatGPT can potentially be used as a tool for research assistance in several ways. For example, you could use ChatGPT to generate ideas for research topics or questions, or to help you brainstorm and organize your research. ChatGPT could also be used to generate summaries or syntheses of research sources, which could be helpful for getting a broad understanding of a topic or for identifying key points and arguments.
Keep in mind that ChatGPT is a language model, so it may not be able to provide the same level of in-depth research assistance as a human expert or specialist. It is also important to carefully review and evaluate the output generated by ChatGPT to ensure that it is accurate and relevant to your needs. This mainly due to 2 reasons:
Knowledge cutoff from after 2021: As an avid user, and observer, of chatgpt, I've noticed that its knowledge is based on the data it was trained on, which means it doesn't have access to information about events or developments that have occurred after 2021. This can be a bit of a bummer when it comes to research assistance, because it means that ChatGPT may not be able to provide the most up-to-date or current information on a given topic.
Misinformation online: I've found that it can be a useful tool for research assistance, but I've also noticed that it's not always the most reliable source of information. One reason for this is that ChatGPT relies on online data as its main source of information, which can sometimes be misleading or biased. As an example, it could link me to wrong or fishy websites or give me biased or misinformation. The best to avoid this, at least what Iโve found so far, is to, first, research about the topic a bit yourself, find reliable sources and ask ChatgGPT to either summarize, paraphrase or extend on that piece of information.
None of this to say that itโs always wrong, or always gives biased information, its just to remind you that itโs still quite important to fact check when it comes to ChatGPT. Some examples of this:
This is straight up funny. ๐
When in actuality, Biden did do this:
Paraphrasing and summarization โ
Summarization and paraphrasing are super important when it comes to writing essays. They help you use information from other sources without, like, copying it word for word and getting in trouble for plagiarism. And when you summarize or paraphrase something correctly, it shows that you understand the material and can explain it in your own words. This makes your writing more unique and helps you tailor the information from outside sources to fit the specific needs of your essay. Plus, it can help you understand the material better too, since you have to really think about it to summarize or paraphrase it correctly. For this section, I input just an entire article on black holes that I found online, and just to check for AI generated content, I will also be using https://writer.com/ai-content-detector/:
*Checking the text against AI text detectors*
Just to get even better results, I decided to ask it once more to paraphrase the text:
Much better! I think its safe to say ChatGPT is quite an effective tool to summarize/paraphrase either to understand something, or to just use it as an academic source of information (crtl c+ crtl v๐).
Potential Concerns And Limitations โ โ๏ธ
Context-Related Issues ๐ฅ
There are several potential concerns and limitations to using ChatGPT as a tool for essay or blog writing. One being that that chatGPT may not be able to fully understand the context or purpose of the text being generated. While the model is capable of generating text that is relevant to a given prompt, it may not always fully capture the nuances or subtleties of the topic being discussed. This could lead to the generation of text that is inaccurate or misleading.
Biases in terms of information ๐
โโ๏ธ
Another concern is the potential for bias in the text generated by ChatGPT. The model is trained on a dataset of human conversation, which may contain biases that are reflected in the generated text. This could be particularly problematic if the text generated by ChatGPT is being used to represent a group of people or to make arguments about sensitive topics.
Redeeming Features ๐
Despite these potential concerns and limitations, chatGPT does have some redeeming features that make it a useful tool for essay and blog writing, as we have seen throughout this post. It really boils down to repetition and fine-tuning your prompts to get the best results (which is a topic I will go into more detail about in the next post, so subscribe!)
